Organized Mess App

This app gives makers the opportunity to create an inventory of their art and craft supplies as well as a journal to organize their projects.  It will search the inventory for supplies when a new project is created.

The Problem

While completing the Google UX design certification courses, I was tasked to create an app to solve a problem.  I wanted to find something that I could easily find people to be my "users" so I could complete all parts of the project with real user input. Because I am an avid crafter and am active at my local makerspace, I decided to create an app that helps people create an inventory of their art and craft supplies and organize their projects in the same place.

As an avid crafter who enjoys using a variety of mediums, I have a large variety of supplies in my craft room. Individuals like me often have a hard time keeping track of all of the supplies that we own no matter how we try to develop an inventory system. A lack of way to easily create an inventory can lead to buying duplicates of supplies and spending a lot of time looking for supplies rather than creating.

The Goal

My goal is to provide individuals who have a variety of art and craft supplies with one location to keep an inventory of their supplies as well as a place to record information about their projects.  The app will search the inventory for supplies that are already owned when a new project journal is created.  In addition, the app will suggest substitution of already owned supplies for needed supplies on the list or add the needed supply to a shopping list.

Empathize, Research, and Define

I gathered user research through a survey which I created and shared out through my local makerspace. I focused on an audience that each do a wide variety of art and crafts. The survey focused on types of supplies the individuals own, how they keep inventory of their supplies, and how they currently develop projects. It also contained questions about how the individuals currently track their supply inventory and what problem with their inventory tracking and project selection they would most like to solve.  In addition to the survey, I spoke to each of the individuals who responded to get more information.

The data showed that the responders do a wide variety of arts and crafts and are interested in a way to easily create an inventory list for their supplies.

How valuable would you find an app that
Which of the following art or craft type

User Persona

I created one user persona based on the four people who responded to my user survey.

Problem Statement

Rosie is a maker of a variety of arts and crafts who needs an effective way to create a database of her art and craft supplies because she is wasting time and money when she doesn’t know which supplies she already owns.

User Journey Map

The journey map shows how the Organized Mess app could be used to prepare for a new painting project.
